Arsenal are interested in bringing in former Nice defender Malang Sarr to the club, according to Charles Watts.

Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, provided the update during a recent video posted on his YouTube channel in which he was responding to a number of listener questions regarding what the Gunners might do in this summer’s transfer window.

To kick off this 1990s Premier League quiz, which season was the Premier League's inaugural campaign?

On the subject of the French Under-21 international, he said:

“There is Malang Sarr who is a free agent – obviously very appealing, used to play for Nice – that Arsenal have been speaking to about the possibility of coming to the Emirates, but they haven’t offered him a contract. Pretty much all contract offers are on hold until the end of the season when they get a clear outlook on what their financial position is.

“He is someone they’re looking at, and he is a free transfer, which for Arsenal would be very, very appealing.”

Sarr made 19 Ligue 1 appearances for Nice during the 2019/20 campaign but left the club on 1st July when his contract expired. His performances in the French top-flight earned him an average rating of 6.56/10 according to WhoScored.com but according to Watts, there are a number of clubs interested in landing the player, which may suggest he possesses considerable promise.

Would Sarr be a good signing for Arsenal?

TIF Thoughts…

Sarr is a left-footed central defender and given he is available on a free transfer, he is somebody who may appeal to Mikel Arteta, who recently expressed his concerns with regard to what he will be allowed to spend this summer.

Last month, the Gunners announced that David Luiz would be staying on with the club for another season and that they had agreed deals to sign Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares (via Arsenal.com). Taking that into consideration, plus the fact William Saliba will be available to the North London club next season, we believe it is unlikely they will spend big on a central defender and so Sarr could be an additional option which would require little investment.
