On the most recent edition of The Express and Star’s Baggies Broadcast podcast, West Bromwich Albion journalist Joseph Masi declared that the Baggies are ‘in talks’ to sign Peterborough United forward and alleged Celtic target, Ivan Toney.

Toney enjoyed a positive 2019/20 campaign. He scored 24 goals and provided six assists in his 32 League One appearances for Peterborough United, ending the season as League One’s highest goalscorer, nine goals clear of the second-highest goalscorer in England’s third tier.

It mightn’t come as a big surprise that Toney is reportedly attracting interest from other clubs following his impressive 2019/20 campaign. Recent reports have linked the 24-year-old with a move to Celtic and West Brom, in addition to other clubs.

During the most recent edition of the Baggies Broadcast podcast, Masi spent some time talking about the Baggies’ need for a new striker and mentioned that he believes Brentford’s Ollie Watkins would be the ‘ideal’ person to head West Brom’s attack, before going on to question whether the Brentford man would be within the Baggies’ price range.

He then went on to discuss West Brom’s pursuit of Toney, saying: “They are looking at Ivan Toney from Peterborough, they’re in talks for him at the minute.”

TIF Thoughts…

Masi’s claim that West Brom are ‘in talks’ to sign Toney at present indicates that the club appear to be actively trying to secure the £360k-rated attacker’s signature, which may be exciting news for Baggies supporters given how many goals he scored for Peterborough United last season.

However, it would still be a step up for Toney to join newly-promoted West Brom in the Premier League. The ex-Newcastle United man has only played 10 minutes of top-flight football in the past and has never even competed in the Championship. With that in mind, it may be fair to say that there might be plenty of risk involved with this transfer, despite Toney’s prolific record from the 2019/20 campaign.
