West Brom journalist Joseph Masi explained why the Baggies are yet to officially complete the signing of Matheus Pereira during a recent edition of the ‘Baggies Broadcast’ podcast.

Earlier this year, the Express and Star reported that West Brom would be obliged to sign Pereira, who joined the Baggies on loan from Sporting CP last summer, on a permanent basis after making ‘30 Championship appearances of 45 minutes or more.’

As per Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old Brazilian playmaker made his 30th and 31st Championship appearances of 45 minutes or more this season during the Baggies’ most recent two league fixtures and Masi addressed a fan’s question about why the club is yet to announce his official signing during a recent edition of the Baggies Broadcast podcast

Masi said: “Albion have got nine games in 33 days, Pereira has got a lot of football to play, a lot of training to do, he’s got a lot of resting to do that he needs to do properly and there’s just not any urgency to it.

“They’ve got to dot the ‘i’s’ and cross the ‘t’s’ and do whatever they need to do on the contract or whatever, but it doesn’t matter what happens now – they have to buy him.

“He could wake up tomorrow having had all of his footballing superpowers been taken away and Albion would have to buy him, there’s nothing they can do about it. Obviously we all want him, desperately, but they’re contractually obliged to buy him.

“I think Albion would rather Pereira was thinking about Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow than thinking about when he’s coming in to get his contract signed.”

TIF Thoughts…

It may be fair to say that Pereira has played a significant role for the Baggies in the Championship this season, having made more Championship assists than any other West Brom player during the 2019/20 league campaign and with that in mind, it might not come as a big surprise that some West Brom fans may be eager to see the club announce his permanent signing.

However, as explained by Masi, the Baggies are now obliged to sign the playmaker and the journalist’s explanation that the club only has to “dot the ‘i’s’ and cross the ‘t’s’” on his contract now may ease any concerns about the deal to make his move to The Hawthorns permanent.
