Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly set to face some more competition in their chase for reported target Ivan Toney.

Football Insider recently reported that Championship club West Bromwich Albion have set their sights on signing the Peterborough striker. A Baggies source has told Football Insider that West Brom are ‘plotting a move’ for Toney irrespective of whether they get promoted to the Premier League or not.

Starting with an easy one: which Italian club did Nakamura join Celtic from?

This comes days after Posh recruitment chief Barry Fry had revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail (via the Scottish Sun) that Celtic are interested in signing the League One striker. He had also made it clear that clubs would need to shell out £15 million to sign Toney. Fry had also mentioned Celtic’s Old Firm rivals as one of the interested clubs, despite reports later emerging that the Hoops had not made contact over a potential swoop for the forward.

Back in January, BristolPost had also talked about Celtic’s interest in signing Toney and Bristol City were also mentioned as one of the interested parties. But later on, Fry had confirmed that the striker wouldn’t leave in the January transfer window.,

Does it make sense for Celtic to sign Toney?

TIF Thoughts…

Toney boasts an impressive goalscoring record, as he scored 26 times in all competitions for Peterborough in the 2019/20 season, racking up a total of 24 goals in League One (via Transfermarkt).

There is certainly no doubting Toney’s goalscoring ability. But the Hoops already have four strikers in Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo in the side. Plus, Toney would cost £15 million, meaning that the Bhoys would have to pay a club-record fee to sign him. So roping him in from Peterborough would make little or no sense.
