George Caulkin has been speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, and was asked about the possible timescale for when the takeover of Newcastle United could be completed.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

However, The Athletic reporter refused to be drawn on this subject after the numerous false dawns that have occurred relating to the takeover.

Caulkin said that he just doesn’t ‘want to do that’ when asked about a possible timescale for the Premier League’s decision.

He went on to state that ‘we’ve all thought at various moments it has been very, very close’ and that ‘there was certainly a sense of them being ready for that announcement to come, and that hasn’t happened’.

Therefore, it appears as if Caulkin does not want to raise any expectations. Here is what he said when asked about a possible timescale on this deal:

“I just don’t want to do that again. We’ve all thought at various moments that it’s been very, very close because that’s what we had been told.

“There was certainly a sense of them being ready for that announcement to come, and that hasn’t happened, and there have been more questions, so I just don’t think it helps anybody if I do that.

“It just serves to get people excited, irate, and we’ve already seen this vicious circle of ‘it’s imminent’, ‘oh no, it’s not’, so let’s just wait and see and let them do it.”

Do you think Caulkin is right to not provide a timescale?

TIF Thoughts…

It seems as if Caulkin is taking the cautious approach on this, and that makes sense, especially after one report in The Sun previously claimed that the deal was all set to be announced on 1st June – only for that to not happen.

It also must be hard for Caulkin to predict when an announcement might be made because the Premier League’s chief executive Richard Masters had suggested that there was no timescale for this process.

However, he did also say that he believes the Premier League is in the ‘final stage’ of checking Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed bid to take Newcastle from Mike Ashley.

So, even though publicly Caulkin refused to be drawn on the matter, perhaps he has an idea of when the Premier League might be finished with their checks.
