Peterborough United have reportedly rejected a bid from a club for Celtic target Ivan Toney recently.

Peterborough Today recently reported that the Posh have turned down a £4 million bid for the player, with the offer coming from Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

The report claims that the MLS side had also offered some add-ons in the deal, but Peterborough have turned it down ‘flat’ as they expect more than double the amount which was originally offered.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

Posh director of football Barry Fry confirmed this information and gave more details about Toney’s future. He expects ‘bigger offers’ for the striker.

Fry said: “Lots of clubs will be looking for a top-class striker and there won’t be any better than Ivan available, especially at what we consider a reasonable price for a player of his age who has already improved considerably and will improve even more in the future.”

Should Celtic back away from Toney?

Fry had previously given an interview to the Daily Mail (via Daily Record) in which he had confirmed Celtic’s interest in Toney. As far back as January, it was reported that the Hoops have been keeping tabs on the £360k-rated striker.

TIF Thoughts…

If Peterborough do indeed want a fee of around £8 million for Toney, we believe that Celtic should back away from this race.

Odsonne Edouard is in talks to extend his Parkhead contract and it seems as if he will stay at the club for longer, with the Hoops’ transfer record happening to be the £9 million that they spent on Edouard.

As such, it would seem that spending £8 million on a position that doesn’t particularly need fixing would not make a great deal of sense for the Hoops.

Furthermore, the club already has four striker options: Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo. So adding another striker like Toney would not be a good move at all.

In our view, the Hoops should give up the chase and focus on other areas of the pitch.
