The Athletic reporter Roshane Thomas has recently aired some criticism of West Ham United’s French striker Sebastien Haller.

The Hammers secured the services of the 25-year-old attacker from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt last summer for a hefty fee which is worth up to £45m (per BBC).

Since his arrival at the London Stadium, the Frenchman has bagged a decent if uninspiring seven Premier League goals in 27 appearances (per WhoScored).

So, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s U Irons podcast, which is dedicated to discussion about the London club, Thomas discussed his thoughts on the striker.

He said: “Considering Sebastien Haller cost so much money, we’re thinking this guy is going to score at least 15-20 goals for West Ham this season, and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out.

“Just watching Haller every week, my main frustration is that you’re watching and you think [he] could do a bit more.

“I know you [Haller] don’t have much pace, but you can run around a bit more, you can chase after lost causes. I mean, you can cause defenders more problems.

“You’ve got to do much better. You’re the club’s record signing and we’re not seeing enough value out of you.

“When you have someone to play alongside him we see the best out of Haller, but when he plays up top by himself, it just doesn’t work.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in the discussion from the Athletic’s reporter, it seems that he has been very disappointed with what he has seen from the striker this season.

However, despite the criticism from the journalist, the Frenchman has been the Hammers’ best-performing player in the Premier League so far this season.

Despite only bagging seven goals and one assist, the 25-year-old has secured a 7.21 average rating in the league which puts him far ahead of the second-best performer, Michail Antonio and his 7.09/10 average rating (per WhoScored).

So, perhaps Thomas is being slightly harsh on the £32.4m-rated forward (per Transfermarkt).
