Spurs fans on Twitter have been reacting to some quotes from Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson in the wake of their 1-1 draw with Manchester United last Friday.
The former Arsenal midfielder discussed Friday night’s result on Sky Sports, saying (as per Football Daily via The Spurs Web): “For me, they were one of the best teams in the league. Get Tottenham’s best eleven players on the pitch [and] they’re as good as anybody.
“I just don’t know what’s happened. I don’t know if the players have got disheartened. The way they’re playing is not entertaining.”
The result has left the Lilywhites in eighth position in the Premier League table, now nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after the Blues’ win against Aston Villa on Sunday. Spurs arguably started well against Mourinho’s old side on Friday evening, with Steven Bergwijn’s effort giving them the lead at half time, however, the full-time stats in terms of shots on target and possession certainly suggest that the north London club were on the back foot for a lot of the game (per BBC).

Reaction from Spurs fans to the quotes from Merson can be seen in the tweets below.
He is such a liar it’s embarrassing. For years he has been saying Spurs ain’t very good. Whenever we played a so called top team he would say things like “I fear for Spurs today” “They could get beat 5/6 today” “They’ve got no chance of a result today”.

Other Spurs fans seemed to feel that Merson was making an obvious point.
Stadium has hurt the team , simple as that . We all know this merse .

What happened is that we employed Mourinho. We play like a Mourinho team!

Some Spurs fans seem to think that Merson was spot on in his suggestion.
I don’t normally like anything Mers says but hes spot on we have gone backwards

Probably the most sensible thing I’ve ever heard come out of Mersons mouth

It seems as if Merson has split the opinion of these Spurs fans, but we feel that he is right to suggest that the Lilywhites’ performance on Friday night was less than entertaining, with the north London side perhaps happy to sit back after taking the lead, which is reflected in the stats in terms of possession and shots on target from the away side.
