On the latest episode of the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Ricky Sacks, Jamie Brown, Abbi Summers and guest Aaron Paul have been discussing the latest goings-on at the North London club, as well as looking back on last week’s draw with Manchester United and the upcoming fixture with West Ham.

One topic that was discussed during the latest episode, ‘Typical Tottenham‘, was the future of Spurs striker Harry Kane. The England captain was far from his best during Friday’s draw with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side; earning a disappointing 6.5/10 rating for his display (per WhoScored).

However, it was the 26-year-old’s first appearance since New Year’s Day, with the forward having been sidelined with a hamstring injury for the majority of 2020 before the enforced break allowed him to get fit in time for the Premier League’s resumption last week.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? - Who did Spurs beat in the opening fixture?

The academy graduate’s disappointing performance perhaps led to the journalists to discuss whether or not they can see Kane staying with Spurs long-term, with Summers suggesting:

“If the team is set up correctly to benefit Harry  – and not just keep doing the long ball we saw so many times [on Friday], because I don’t think that helps anyone – I think he will be fine. My thing would be is if we will hold on to him, come the summer. He said, while [Mauricio Pochettino] was there: ‘Obviously if I can see the direction of the football club, I will always stay, if I can see the growth in the projects.’

“Maybe we get another season. If we manage [to keep him this] summer, I don’t necessarily know if he’ll be there next [year].”

Do you think Kane would have left this summer if not for the viral outbreak?

Yes

Yes

No

No

When asked if she thought other clubs could afford the Englishman this summer, given the financial impact of the virus, she goes on to say:

“I think that might be the benefit for us at the minute, that we could hold on to him for another season, I think had [the virus] not have happened, he might have been going this summer. But obviously, with the affordability at the minute, I think that we might keep him for another year. But he deserves to go somewhere and win everything because he’s that good.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering Kane is currently valued at £108 million by Transfermarkt, it is hard to see any club paying the necessary fee to bring in the England captain this summer, especially given the financial impact of the current viral outbreak. Despite his long-term injury, the forward still has 17 goals in all competitions this season and he will no doubt be confident of adding to that tally in the remaining Premier League fixtures.

However, we feel it is also fair to suggest that the Englishman could well have been on his way out of Spurs this summer if it were not for the viral outbreak, as the Lilywhites currently look unlikely to be playing Champions League football next season, and a player of Kane’s obvious quality perhaps does need to be playing at the highest level.

If Jose Mourinho is unable to deliver a trophy, or Champions League football, next season, then we feel that the 26-year-old may feel that it is time to call it quits at the North London club and try his hand elsewhere.
