Jose Mourinho’s biggest challenge this summer will be to keep hold of Harry Kane, according to Chris Sutton. The former Premier League winner was speaking on a recent edition of the BBC’s Football Daily podcast following Tottenham’s victory over West Ham United on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites ran out 2-0 winners to register their first victory in eight games and add to the problems their London rivals face. Kane scored the second goal on the night, prompting the pundit to discuss the subject of the 26-year-old’s future.

How well do you remember Heung-Min Son's time with Spurs? - The Lilywhites signed Son from which Bundesliga side?

Sutton said: “Mourinho’s biggest issue this summer will be holding onto Harry Kane. Because if Harry Kane had any real ambition, then he would want to leave Spurs. That’s as simple as that.”

“Are Spurs going to challenge City? Liverpool? When you look at Chelsea, Chelsea are leaving Spurs behind at this moment in time with their recruitment.”

TIF Thoughts…

Sutton clearly believes that Spurs aren’t capable of challenging the league’s very best teams at the moment, and in order for Kane to go on and win major trophies in his career, he will need to move on.

Do you think Harry Kane will stay at Spurs until he retires?

At present, the north London club are currently six points adrift of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots and a whopping 38 points behind league leaders Liverpool. Having reached a European final last season, you could be forgiven for thinking Spurs were going to push on from there, but that certainly hasn’t been the case. In fact, they are 16 points worse off than what they were at this same stage last season.

Kane has scored an impressive 182 goals and provided 30 assists in 280 appearances for the club (via Transfermarkt.co.uk), highlighting his importance to the side. Although he still has approximately four years to run on his current contract, if Spurs continue to be off the pace next season, we could well see the England forward begin to consider a move away in search of silverware.
