On the latest episode of the View from The Lane podcast for The Athletic, Jack Pitt-Brooke, Charlie Eccleshare and James Maw have been discussing the latest goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur, as well as looking back on the 2-0 win against West Ham.

One topic of conversation on the recent episode, which was titled: ‘Mourinho v Merson & West Ham reaction‘, was the reported interest in former Spurs winger Marcus Edwards. It was suggested that Spurs were interested in bringing the winger back to the north London club this summer, after he departed to join Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes last summer.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? - Who did Spurs beat in the opening fixture?

This perhaps led to a discussion on the recent episode, with The Athletic journalists suggesting that there is little chance of him coming back to the Premier League this summer, with Pitt-Brooke suggesting:

“I know that there were reports in Portugal the other day saying that Spurs are interested in signing back Marcus Edwards from Vitoria this summer. Having had a few conversations about this yesterday, I would be absolutely shocked if this was to happen. I think too much has gone on between the two parties. I don’t think there’s much willingness from either side to do a deal there. I think the only people who would want it, frankly, are Vitoria because Spurs have got a 50% sell-on clause.

“That means that if Spurs were to buy him for, let’s say, £5m, then Vitoria will get all of that money. They wouldn’t have to give any back to Tottenham. Whereas, if another team were to spend £10m, then Vitoria would have to give £5m to Spurs. While I do think Marcus Edwards will be on the move this summer, I think there’s plenty of interest in him from Portugal and also some from France and Spain and Germany. I do not think he will be coming back to Spurs.”

TIF Thoughts…

Edwards has certainly impressed in his first season in Portugal, with the 21-year-old having contributed five goals and four assists in 20 appearances in the Liga NOS, averaging a superb 7.34 rating (per Whoscored). Whilst this is impressive, and the youngster is valued at just £2.88m by Transfermarkt, it would perhaps be difficult to see him returning to Spurs this summer, due to the plethora of options they have in his position, with Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son, Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn all available as wingers in Jose Mourinho’s squad. (per Transfermarkt).

Would you like to see Edwards return to Spurs this summer?

No

However, it seems from what Pitt-Brooke suggests that there is some interest in the 21-year-old from clubs abroad, so perhaps Spurs can benefit from their 50% sell-on clause this summer.
