Southampton’s on-loan defender Kevin Danso looks set to leave the club at the end of the current season but reports have claimed that there is a chance he does return soon.

Augsburg-based outlet Augsburger Allgemeine have recently talked about Danso’s situation at St. Mary’s. They reveal that Southampton aren’t going to take up the option of signing the defender permanently and the deadline to do that has already passed.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

The report from Augsburger Allgemeine also claims that Danso’s future at Augsburg remains insecure and there are clubs interested in him. Sport Witness cite this report to say that once he goes back to the German club, a return to Southampton ‘also seems possible’ for Danso. They claim that the Saints need to save money and would only sign him for a lower price than what was agreed as an option in the current loan deal.

The Saints signed the Austrian in the summer of 2019 on a loan deal but had the option to sign him permanently if they like. Going by the reports though, there seems to be uncertainty about where his future lies.

Should Southampton sign Danso permanently?

TIF Thoughts…

While the situation is certainly a complicated one, 21-year-old Danso has made only six Premier League appearances for the Saints so far, with three of them being starts. His average overall WhoScored rating of 6.13/10 in the Premier League is the second-lowest rating of any player at the club for the current campaign too.

This may show that he hasn’t been a great signing by any means for Southampton and it won’t be a surprise if this is his last season at St. Mary’s and he doesn’t return to the club later on.
