Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn is reportedly looking at the possibility of leaving the club.

As per The Sun (21 June, page 59, via HITC), Gunn is ‘keen on the idea’ of departing St. Mary’s on loan this summer. The report claims that Gunn will struggle to reject the chance to go out on loan and prove himself to his current club. He is in search of regular first-team football in his career now, with the reports suggesting he would even be open to a move to the Championship.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

Gunn is by no means a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl. Valued at £5.85 million by Transfermarkt, the Englishman has made only 13 appearances in all competitions so far this season. In the Premier League, he hasn’t featured since Southampton’s 9-0 loss to Leicester City earlier in the season.

TIF Thoughts…

Clearly, Gunn isn’t playing as much as he would like at Southampton, with Alex McCarthy being the club’s regular starter between the sticks since the loss to the Foxes at St. Mary’s.

As a Manchester City player, Gunn spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Norwich City in the Championship and had played regularly for the Canaries.

It shows that he can be an important player for a Championship club and that could help him prove to Southampton that he can perform for them on a regular basis.

At 24, he can still improve as a footballer and a move to the Championship could allow him to get the first-team football that he needs. So the former Man City man is making a wise decision to seek a Saints exit at this point.
