The Saudi-backed consortium hoping to complete a takeover of Newcastle United are in contact with the Premier League and have been answering further questions this week, according to George Caulkin. The Athletic’s senior writer shared the update via Twitter in response to a question posed by a supporter.

There has still been no official announcement in regards to whether or not the prospective owners have passed the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test, despite The Telegraph’s claims that this process usually takes up to four weeks. They also reported that the process began on approximately April 9 – yet we are now in June and there is still no word.

Further to Caulkin’s latest update, the prospective owners have indeed reiterated their commitment to invest if and when they take control of the club. The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund will take an 80% stake and have already spent billions on high-profile entertainment, travel and leisure investments (as per Chronicle Live).

Steve Bruce took over the reins at St. James’ Park in July, succeeding Rafael Benitez, and his side currently find themselves in 13th place, eight points clear of the drop zone. However, if the takeover is to be completed, it is unknown whether or not Bruce will be in a job at the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

Sky Sports reported back in April that the prospective owners would be willing to give the 59-year-old until the end of the season to prove himself, but it is not known whether his future has already been decided.
