Luke Edwards has been speaking on the Gallowgate Shots podcast, and he provided an update on how Steve Bruce feels about how some Toon fans have reacted to him since he was appointed.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

The Daily Telegraph reporter also spoke about other issues, but he spent a good chunk of time talking about Bruce.

Here is what he had to say on the Toon’s boss in full:

“I know how hurt he has been at times by the treatment.

“I don’t blame him for taking the job. I was wanting to give him a chance, and do you know what, he’s done pretty well.

“If Rafa Benitez, at this same stage of the season, was 13th in the table and in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, everyone would be heralding him as you know, ‘he’s done a wonderful job’, ‘oh, his hands are tied behind his back by Mike Ashley’.

“Steve Bruce has done that job, and he’s never been given the respect he deserves and there is no real warmth to him.”

It therefore seems that Edwards feels as if Bruce and Benitez would not have been treated equally by some Newcastle fans, and the former Sunderland boss deserves more credit for what he has done this season.

Do you think Bruce has received the credit he deserves?

TIF Thoughts…

Prior to the Premier League’s restart, Newcastle are 13th, eight points clear of the relegation zone and are in the FA Cup quarter-finals. On that basis, Bruce has done a good job.

Compared to predecessor Benitez, last season saw Newcastle finish in 13th and get knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round.

Bruce was not a popular choice with many Toon fans when he became the Magpies’ boss in July 2019.

However, he has done a decent job with the Toon, and maybe he does deserve more credit than he currently gets – and Edwards certainly thinks so.

Bruce has nine league games left to try and convince some Newcastle fans that he has done a good job this season.
