Luke Edwards has been speaking on the Gallowgate Shots podcast, and he has revealed that Matty Longstaff was ‘very, very close’ to signing a new contract with Newcastle United before his debut against Manchester United in October.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

The Daily Telegraph reporter spoke about many topics, but he dedicated a decent amount of time to the 20-year-old and his current situation.

Here is what he had to say about Longstaff in full:

“What we don’t know about the Matty Longstaff situation is before that Man U game, he was close to signing a contract, which I won’t talk about the terms, but he was very, very close to signing a contract for considerably less than [what] he has been offered now.

“As soon as he started against Man U, scored that goal – contract talks broke down.”

If what Edwards is saying is true, then it seems as if the 20-year-old was on the verge of signing a new deal, only for him to make his Premier League debut and score the winning goal against Manchester United.

TIF Thoughts…

Now Longstaff’s deal runs out at the end of this month, and he reportedly has a contract offer from Udinese that is worth £30,000 per week and a ‘multi-million-pound’ signing-on bonus.

The Toon have responded with an offer of £25,000 per week plus bonuses, but as of yet, he has not signed a new deal.

The 20-year-old has made 13 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions this season and has scored three goals, including two against the Red Devils.

However, despite this, it is unclear if he will stay on Tyneside or move on.

It is interesting to know that he was close to signing a new deal, but his Premier League debut supposedly saw those talks end.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle can reach an agreement with Longstaff or not.
