George Caulkin has been speaking on the latest episode of The Athletic’s Pod On The Tyne podcast, and he has revealed his view on Matty Longstaff’s contract situation.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

The Athletic reporter believes that the deal that Newcastle have put to the 20-year-old is a ‘very fair offer’.

Caulkin has been told that Newcastle have offered Longstaff £20,000 per week, plus another £10,000 every time he plays.

This comes after news emerged that Longstaff had been offered a deal worth £30,000 per week from Udinese, and though Caulkin thinks that Newcastle have made a good offer for the 20-year-old, he does worry ‘if it’s got too far’.

However, he did suggest that the potential new owners ‘would want him to stay’.

Here is what Caulkin had to say in full:

“Newcastle have now responded with an offer which I was told was around £20,000 a week plus £10,000 every time he plays – that strikes me as being a very fair offer for a lad who has started six games in the Premier League.

“The question, I suppose, is whether it’s got too far to be resolved – hopefully not.

“The new owners would want him to stay, and they would want to keep him, and this is something both sides have talked about.”

Do you agree with Caulkin that Newcastle have made a fair offer?

Yes, that is a cracking offer

No, he deserves more

TIF Thoughts…

Longstaff has made seven Premier League appearances for Newcastle, in which he has started six, while scoring two goals.

Therefore, we agree with Caulkin that Newcastle’s offer to the 20-year-old is a fair one, and hopefully, he rejects the one from Udinese to stay on Tyneside.

His older brother plays in the same team as him, and £20,000 per week is not bad for a young lad who has only made seven Premier League appearances – so you imagine there are plenty of reasons for Longstaff to stick around.

However, as things stand, he has not signed a new deal, and if nothing changes, his contract will expire on 30th June.

Hopefully, he decides to sign the offer on the table from the Toon.
