Some Newcastle United fans took to Twitter to slate Joelinton following the Toon’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday.
The Toon’s clash with Villa was goalless up until the 68th minute when the partnership of Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle combined to open the scoring for Newcastle. The opening goal of the game came four minutes after Joelinton was withdrawn from the pitch at the 64-minute mark, making way for Carroll, who provided the assist for Gayle’s goal. The goalscorer had only been brought off the substitutes’ bench one minute prior to opening the scoring in this fixture.
During his time on the pitch on Wednesday evening, Joelinton only managed to take one shot, which didn’t hit the target. According to WhoScored, the Brazilian forward also made just one key pass in the game and won just 12% of his aerial duels against Villa.
With all of that in mind, it may not come as a big surprise that some Toon fans shared criticism for Joelinton on Twitter following Wednesday’s game.

That’s what joelinton cant do. Great finish from Gayle. If we had paid 40 million for a goalscorer. We’d be top 8 #nufc

Joelinton has been awful, if we had a striker who could score.
We would be in top 10 easy— thomas allman (@tomallman1993) June 24, 2020
Majority of people believe Gayle is a championship level striker. What does that make Joelinton? #NUFC

Andy Carroll has a better touch with his chest than Joelinton has with his feet. #nufc #NEWAVL

Some Newcastle fans shared their view that Carroll is a better player than the 23-year-old Brazilian.
Who is the better striker?JOELINTONANDY CARROLL |
Joelinton ended up winning 2 of 17 in the air, 1 of 5 on the ground. Carroll came on and won 4 of 6 in the air, 1 of 2 on the ground. He should start on Sunday. Good 2nd half from Danny Rose, ASM worthy MOM. #NUFC

really hope we get a exceptional striker when the Newcastle Takeover goes through #NEWAVL pic.twitter.com/59fOjARiHW— @Garyhayles (@garyhayles85) June 24, 2020
Carroll offers so much more than Joelinton. I want Joe to do well but a fit Carroll gets in ahead of him. His strength, his hold up play, his aural ability is so much better than Joe’s. #NUFC

Andy Carroll play ahead of Joelinton from now on like #NUFC #nufctakeover

Considering that Newcastle’s goal came just four minutes after the £18m-rated Joelinton left the pitch, it isn’t too surprising that some Toon fans have been critical of the forward on social media following this 1-1 draw.
Furthermore, knowing that the Magpies paid a club-record transfer fee to sign Joelinton last summer, the fact that the striker didn’t even manage to hit the target once during his time on the pitch against 19th-placed Aston Villa may also have fuelled these critical reactions from some Toon supporters.
