Newcastle United fans on Twitter have been responding to the latest news surrounding a potential new contract for midfielder Matty Longstaff.
This comes after Newcastle news Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post on their page relaying quotes made by Newcastle manager Steve Bruce in a recent press conference ahead of their FA Cup clash against Manchester City this weekend.
When asked what the latest news was concerning a new deal for Longstaff, Bruce said that “if players want to run down their contract there’s not much we can do as a club”.
This post then gathered a lot of replies from Newcastle fans who were quick to share their thoughts on Bruce’s comments.
Here’s a sample of Newcastle fans responding to the post:
Steve Bruce on Matty Longstaff: “If players want to run down their contract there's not much we can do as a club.” #NUFC

He’s 5th choice, played a handful of games and is apparently being offered between £15k and £20k a week. For someone who is currently 5th choice he should be snapping their hand off imo!

So far this season, the 20-year-old has made seven appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League in which he has managed to score two goals along the way.
To be honest, he’s not a class act. He’s barely played, needs to develop a lot! If he goes, I won’t shed a tear plus if we do get taken over, we should aim a lot higher. Local or not!

No big loss

Longstaff’s performances in those seven appearances have earned him a season rating of 6.63/10, making him Newcastle’s 16th highest-rated player for this campaign (per WhoScored).
It’s a shame if he does leave as he’s a academy product with potential, but let’s be honest, he’s not exactly a #NUFC Phil Foden replica. Just seems like a waste for him to leave. Have to question what advice he’s being given.

Longstaff’s current contract at St, James’ Park runs out at the end of July this year.
Let him go. He isn’t a top player yet, nor has he done a lot on a regular basis as of yet either.
If playing for Newcastle United is not enough for him, then let him go— King Kev (@KevinKeeganNUFC) June 26, 2020
Now that Bruce has come out and insinuated that Longstaff wants to see out his contract at St. James’ Park, this sparked a big reaction on Twitter.
Would you be disappointed if Matty Longstaff left Newcastle this summer?
Yes
No
However, there was one fan responding to the post claiming that the club should be doing everything they can to keep Longstaff as a Newcastle player.
Some of the replies to this show exactly how Ashley has brainwashed everyone and everything at the club. Give the kid what he wants his going to be a star ??

Bruce sounds resigned to Matty walking away from his hometown team. Totally bizarre situation in all honesty. Madness. #NUFC https://t.co/OigOLoyMwt

Could of offered him a decent deal last year and he would of snapped your hand off, stinks of Mike Ashley this. Puppet Bruce.

With Bruce suggesting that there is nothing the club can do to persuade Longstaff to sign a new deal at Newcastle, this all but confirms Longstaff’s intentions in terms of his future at St. James’ Park.
However, looking at the replies to this post, it appears that the majority of these Newcastle fans don’t seem to have a problem with Longstaff potentially leaving the club.
