Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an update on the club’s progress in relation to Angel Gomes’ contract renewal talks during his pre-match press conference ahead of Friday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Gomes, who is a product of Manchester United’s youth academy, is currently set to become a free agent on 30th June. The 19-year-old playmaker made his debut for Manchester United’s senior squad back in the 2016/17 campaign, however, since making his debut for the club, he has gone on to make just nine more appearances for the Red Devils’ senior squad.

Can you score 20/20 on this Premier League quiz? Starting off easy, who is the top scorer in the Premier League this season?

The England U20 international has made only six appearances for United’s senior squad in all competitions this season, with just two of those appearances coming in the Premier League. He has also failed to make a single goal contribution in any of those games

Solskjaer was questioned about the teenager’s future during his pre-match press conference ahead of Friday’s game against Spurs and the Norwegian coach provided an update on the Red Devils’ progress with regard to negotiating a new deal with the player.

He said: “He’s a top, top kid that we’ve had in the club for so many years and we’ve offered him a deal. Hopefully, he’ll take that, if not, I’ll wish him all the best. From what I understand, it’s not too far away.” (8:11)

TIF Thoughts…

Gomes, who is valued at £3.24 million (as per Transfermarkt), has been highly-rated during his time at Manchester United. The club’s website describes him as a “prodigious youth talent” and as per Red Devils-focused website ‘The Republik of Mancunia’, he was the captain of the England U17 side that won the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup. Furthermore, in 2017, Gomes also became the youngest player to ever receive the Red Devils’ ‘Jimmy Murphy Award’, which is presented to the club’s ‘Youth Team Player of the Year’, as per GOAL

With all of that in mind, some United fans may be disappointed if the 19-year-old does leave the club at the end of this month after making a total of just 10 appearances for the senior squad.
