Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has told The Athletic he wishes he could still play for the club. The 40-year-old, currently in charge of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, played over 700 times for the Reds but never tasted Premier League glory.

Gerrard said: “Looking in from the outside now, Liverpool is a machine both on and off the pitch. I envy those players. I wish I was 30 rather than 40 because I’d love to be involved in that.”

During his time with the club, the midfielder won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and three League Cups (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

When asked if seeing Jurgen Klopp’s men lift the coveted trophy would bring on a feeling of ‘that should have been me’, the former England star responded:

“No, I’m not that type of person, Since I finished I’ve only wanted to wish the players that I played with every success.

“I have to live with my regrets if you like and I don’t think they will ever go away. I came close on three occasions. What happened in 2014 is well documented and probably talked about more than the others because of the Chelsea game and how cruel that was.

“But that’s for me to deal with in terms of the little regrets that linger from when I played.”

TIF Thoughts…

Liverpool are on course to win their first top-flight title since the 1989/90 season and currently lead the reigning champions Manchester City by 25 points. Klopp’s side needs just two more victories between now and the end of the season, assuming Pep Guardiola’s side win all their games.

Steven Gerrard will no doubt have some regrets regarding the fact he was never able to lift the Premier League trophy during his Anfield days but regardless of that, we believe he is worthy of his legendary status.
