Liverpool journalist Matt Addison appeared on a recent edition of The Liverpool Echo’s ‘Blood Red’ podcast where he and host Paul Wheelock discussed the Reds’ pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

Wheelock raised the topic of Liverpool’s interest in Sancho during this podcast, saying: “There’s no doubt Liverpool will be interested in Jadon Sancho if and when he leaves Borussia Dortmund, but all of the indications seem to suggest that they wouldn’t be in a position to sign him this summer, given that there was a bit of a saga over Timo Werner.”

Werner had been linked with a move to Anfield before it was announced that the German attacker will join the Reds’ Premier League rivals Chelsea instead. As per Goal, Liverpool’s interest in the 24-year-old ‘cooled significantly’ after the implications of the current viral outbreak began to emerge.

The viral outbreak is reportedly set to have a major impact on football’s transfer market and the Reds’ summer transfer plans may have been hurt as a result of the pandemic and Wheelock seems to think that Liverpool may be unlikely to sign Sancho, who is currently valued at £105.3m according to Transfermarkt.

However, the podcast host did go on to say that: “According to a report in the Daily Mail this morning, [Liverpool] may not be the only club willing to wait it out.”

The Daily Mail article that Wheelock referred to claims that Manchester United, who are also said to be interested in signing Sancho, are ‘willing to wait for Borussia Dortmund to drop their £100m’ asking price for the England international. This article also states that Liverpool too ‘have reservations over the size of the fee’ that Dortmund are reportedly demanding for the player.

Addison replied to Wheelock by saying that he believes the Daily Mail’s report is ‘interesting’ and he doesn’t believe Dortmund’s alleged valuation of the player is ‘unfair or inflated’.

After discussing the Daily Mail’s report, Addison then goes on to share his thoughts on how Liverpool will proceed with their alleged pursuit of the player, saying: “There’ll be a lot of work going on to decide whether he’s the right character to come into Liverpool. I’m sure Liverpool will do their due diligence.

“So it’s an interesting report in a couple of different ways there, but certainly, if you said to me that Liverpool definitely had £100m to spend on a player, I think he’d be the one that I would go for.”

TIF Thoughts…

Sancho has provided the joint-second-highest number of assists of any player in Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues this season. With that in mind, it may be fair to say that the 20-year-old Englishman has been in impressive form this term and it might be understandable why Addison shared that he feels Dortmund’s reported asking price is reasonable.
