Former Liverpool midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has been speaking about Reds defender Virgil van Dijk. 

This comes after he recently made an appearance on Liverpool-based podcast The Anfield Wrap to discuss everything going on with the Merseyside club at the moment.

When asked his opinion on the current Liverpool squad, Redknapp picked out Van Dijk in particular as someone he admires.

He said: “There’s not many players that I’ve seen have an effect on a team like Virgil van Dijk has done, I can honestly say that. He’s such an impressive player; the way that he just calms everyone down, he’s so composed.

“When I think about all the great Liverpool centre-backs, he’s got a bit of everything in them. He organises people. The fact that the crowd when he’s got the ball, everyone just feels calm. He’s fantastic on the ball, he never looks flustered and it’s just been an amazing signing. When you think at the time, people said ‘£75 million, what a lot of money,’ I mean, it’s an absolute snip, because he is as important as any player in world football for this team. Everyone would want Virgil van Dijk in their team.”

Liverpool signed the Dutchman from fellow Premier League side Southampton back in the 2018 January transfer window.

Since then, Van Dijk has gone on to help Jurgen Klopp’s side win the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup (per Transfermarkt).

This season, Van Dijk has been impressive for the Reds, with his performances in the Premier League earning him a season rating of 7.4/10, making him Liverpool’s third-highest-rated player so far in this campaign (per WhoScored).

Van Dijk’s performances so far in the Premier League this season certainly warrant the praise given to him by Redknapp, who is clearly a huge fan of the defender.
