James Pearce, who covers Liverpool for The Athletic, recently conducted a Q&A in which a Liverpool fan questioned him about the possibility of the Reds re-signing Philippe Coutinho.

A recent report from The Athletic revealed that ‘the message coming from the highest levels at Anfield has been that there will be no major signings in the coming transfer window’. However, that hasn’t stopped some Reds fans from thinking about the possibility of the Merseyside club re-signing the £50.4m-rated Brazilian.

Coutinho departed from Anfield back in January 2018, joining Barcelona for £130.5m. After spending just over a year and a half with the Catalan club, Coutinho moved to Bavarian giants Bayern Munich on a season-long loan deal back in August

As per AS, Coutinho revealed that he felt that “things didn’t work out” as he had hoped they would at Barcelona following his move to Bayern. Since then, Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed earlier this year that the German club have allowed their option to purchase Coutinho to expire, indicating that they may not be interested in keeping him at the club beyond his current loan spell.

This uncertainty around the former Liverpool playmaker’s future may have resulted in one Liverpool fan raising the possibility of the Reds re-signing the Brazilian during a recent Q&A with The Athletic’s Reds-focused reporter Pearce

Pearce was asked: “Has the club changed its stance towards bringing in fresh faces? Coutinho?”

He replied: “As for Coutinho, I’d be amazed if he returned to LFC. Just can’t see it.”

TIF Thoughts…

Reports have claimed that the current viral outbreak is set to have a significant impact on football’s transfer market. With that in mind, it mightn’t come as a big surprise if some clubs don’t decide to spend big in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Considering that Barcelona paid £130.5m to lure the Brazilian to Camp Nou from Anfield back in 2018, it might be unlikely that the Catalan side will want to sell him back to the Reds for a much lower fee – and on that basis, it may be understandable why Pearce doesn’t seem to think that this transfer is likely to occur.
