The Mirror’s David Maddock has been discussing the future of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a recent episode of the Blood Red podcast. What the future holds for the 29-year-old remains somewhat unclear with his current contract set to expire at the end of June next year.

Up until now, there has been no news on an extension being agreed between the former Newcastle United man and the Merseyside club. Despite that, Maddock seems confident that the player will remain a Red beyond next summer.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

Speaking on the podcast, Maddock said: “I see him staying, I honestly don’t think they’d want to lose him.”

Wijnaldum has played a key role for Liverpool this season, starting 97% of their Premier League fixtures to date and contributing three goals (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). His average performance rating in the English top-flight this season currently stands at 6.87/10 according to WhoScored.com which isn’t overly impressive, however, based on the frequency of his selection you can gauge an understanding of how much he is valued by Jurgen Klopp.

TIF Thoughts…

Liverpool paid £24.75m to sign the player back in July 2016 and he played a crucial part in their Champions League triumph last season, scoring a brace within two minutes during the semi-final second leg versus Barcelona, sparking an impressive comeback and securing the club’s place in the final for the second successive season.

With the Reds closing in on their first Premier League title, we would say Wijnaldum’s name is already etched into the club’s history but how long he will stay at Anfield remains up for debate.
