Liverpool are now in a position to purchase the likes of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, according to ESPN presenter Steve Dawson.

The Reds were crowned Premier League champions for the first time on Thursday after Manchester City failed to beat Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Dawson has suggested that their recent success, combined with the fact they haven’t made a “big purchase for a couple of seasons” puts them in a strong position to go after world football’s best players.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

Speaking on the Blood Red Podcast, he said: “We can make purchases now that just blow everybody else out of the water, I’m talking about the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe.

“I don’t think it’s a secret, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that despite all the success we’ve had in the last two or three years and all the money we’ve made as a club, that we’ve only purchased players that are not going to hit the first-team for several years.

“We’ve not really made a big purchase for a couple of seasons now and I don’t think it’s any coincidence.”

TIF Thoughts…

De Bruyne did his best to delay Liverpool’s celebrations when he scored an exquisite free-kick for Manchester City to level the score at Chelsea earlier in the week, however, Willian’s successfully despatched penalty saw to it that Pep Guardiola’s side required two late goals in order to delay the inevitable.

The Belgian has been City’s most consistent performer this season with an average performance rating in the league of 7.88/10 (via WhoScored.com). In his 29 appearances this season, he has managed 10 goals and 16 assists which highlights the influence he has over the 2018/19 champions.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the 28-year-old is valued at in excess of £100m, add to that the fact the two clubs are huge rivals, we would expect the fee City would demand to release him from his contract which still has until 2023 to run to be almost impossible for the Reds to meet.
