Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has shared a new update on Dean Smith’s future at Villa Park.

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-based podcast 1874 to reflect on Villa’s recent 1-0 defeat to Wolves at the weekend.

Who scored Villa's goal in their 1-0 win against Stoke City on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season?

After being asked if there were any doubts over whether or not Smith will still be the Villa manager by the end of the season, Evans shared the latest news on the situation.

He said: “It’s my understanding that they’ll stick with him until the end of the season. The fact that he had three months during lockdown to work on this team and get a real plan together, he still claims that he’s got a plan for every single game.

“The fact that he’s done so much hard work and put in so much time and effort during those three months to really give Villa a fighting chance of survival is one of the reasons why they won’t just rip it up in the space of 10-11 days.

“Okay, four games have passed, four really big games, but Villa are not interested in just getting this firefighter figure in or replacing him now, they want Smith to see out the season.

“If they would have wanted to make a change. They would have done it during that period. So they stuck with him and they hope that he can get the job done, but certainly, [he is] running out of time and it looks very, very bleak at the moment.”

Should Villa sack Dean Smith now?

So far this season, Villa have won just seven out of their 32 played league matches, drawing six and losing 19 along the way (per BBC Sport).

TIF Thoughts…

Despite currently sitting in the relegation zone after this latest defeat, it’s good to hear from Evans that Villa have no intentions of sacking Smith before the end of the season.

The hope for everyone at the Birmingham club now would be that Smith can turn Villa’s form around so they can avoid relegation this season.
