Phil Hay spent some time discussing Leeds United’s hopes of signing ‘Premier League class’ Ben White in an article that he recently wrote for The Athletic

Hay talked about the important role that White has played for Leeds this term in his latest article, stating that the 22-year-old defender ‘has been a defining player’ for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this term.

Nice easy one to start. Who is this current Leeds man?

The journalist went on to say that the defender is ‘right at the very top’ of Leeds United’s list of summer transfer targets in this article, although Hay did also claim that Liverpool and Manchester City, who currently sit in the Premier League’s top two places, both ‘watched White closely before lockdown’.

Additionally, the 22-year-old, who is currently on loan at Elland Road from Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion, is said to be valued ‘in the £20m bracket’ by his parent club, according to Hay. A price tag of £20m would make White a near-record signing for Leeds, who have never spent more than the £23.4m that they spent to sign Rio Ferdinand back in 2000 (as per Transfermarkt). This may price Leeds out of the signing, especially if Liverpool and City are also in the running for his signature.

TIF Thoughts…

As per WhoScored, White has earned an average overall rating of 7.06 from his 39 Championship appearances for Leeds this season, which makes him Leeds’ joint-fourth-highest rated player for the 2019/20 Championship campaign.

With that in mind, it may be understandable why Leeds are said to be placing White ‘right at the very top’ of their list of transfer targets this summer, even if it does appear that the deal may be a difficult one to achieve.
