Charlton Athletic-focused fanzine ‘Voice of The Valley’ recently published a report which claimed that ex-Addicks chief executive Peter Varney and investor Andrew Barclay are “ready to end the crisis” at The Valley as the pair are allegedly preparing a takeover bid.

Voice of The Valley claim that Varney and Barclay have been preparing this takeover bid for “a number of weeks” and this report also includes some comments from Varney who has been discussing this takeover bid.

To kick off this quiz on 2019/20 Championship goalkeepers, can you name which goalkeeper has kept the highest number of clean sheets in the Championship this season?

He shares some confidence in Barclay by stating that he feels the investor “offers stability and the best future for Charlton”. However, Varney does also share that he and Barclay have experienced some difficulty with negotiating the takeover up to this point.

He stated this:

”Andrew is keen to do a deal. However, we need to be able to negotiate with the current ESI majority shareholder, Tahnoon Nimer, through his lawyer, and from there with Roland Duchatelet or his representative, which so far we have been unable to do.”

Do you think that this proposed takeover bid will be successful?

TIF Thoughts…

As explained by Voice of The Valley, Varney served as the Addicks’ chief executive from 1997 until 2008 and it may be fair to say that this was a relatively successful period for the club. As per TalkSPORT, Charlton Athletic spent the majority of their time in England’s top-flight during the time that Varney was the Addicks’ chief executive, indicating that he may have some knowledge with regard to how the club can be run successfully.

With that in mind, his reported involvement in this takeover bid may be a positive for the Addicks, considering that the club have been “left in limbo” of late, as per the Evening Standard, due to Tahnoon Nimer’s failure to prove source and sufficiency of funding to the EFL since he and his ‘East Street Investments’ group completed a takeover of the club back in January.
