Sunderland-focused Twitter account @sunechosafc recently posted a tweet asking Black Cats supporters to name their favourite Sunderland player of all time.

Some of the Sunderland fans who have flocked to this tweet have taken this opportunity to share praise for ex-Black Cats striker Kevin Phillips, with many identifying him as their favourite Sunderland player.

After joining the Black Cats from Watford in July 1997 for a transfer fee of £450k, Phillips went on to score 130 goals in 235 appearances for the club before he left to join Southampton in August 2003 for £4.37m

During his time at Sunderland, Phillips became “the first Englishman to win Europe’s prestigious Golden Shoe award”, as per the BBC, when he scored 30 Premier League goals in the 1999/00 campaign. To this day, Phillips remains the only English player to have won this award.

Read the posts from some Sunderland fans who have named Phillips their favourite Black Cats player of all time recently in the tweets below.

Is Kevin Phillips your favourite Sunderland player of all time?

YES, HE WAS UNPLAYABLE

NO, I PREFER SOMEONE ELSE

What do we think?

It may be fair to say that Phillips enjoyed a successful spell at The Stadium of Light, especially considering that the former striker managed to become the first Englishman to win the European Golden Shoe award during his time as a Black Cats player.

With that in mind, it may not come as a big surprise that many Sunderland fans have named Phillips as their favourite Black Cats player of all time in response to @sunechosafc’s recent post.
