Some Sheffield Wednesday fans have flocked to a tweet that was recently posted by Owls-focused Twitter account @VitalWednesday discussing ex-Wednesday player Marco Matias.

Matias joined Belenenses SAD in October 2019 after he was released by Wednesday at the end of the 2018/19 campaign. However, it appears as though the 30-year-old has struggled to hit the ground running at his new club.

As this tweet states, Matias has failed to provide a single goal contribution for his current team, despite featuring in 18 games for them in all competitions thus far.

Some of the Wednesday fans who have been responding to this tweet have been sharing some negative comments about Matias, with one Owls fan declaring that the former Wednesday man “shouldn’t have been anywhere near the Championship”.

What do we think?

Considering that he has failed to provide a single goal contribution for his new team since arriving in October, it may be fair to say that Matias has been struggling this term.

After Wednesday spent £2.79m to bring Matias to Hillsborough in July 2015, he made just three Championship goal contributions in 17 league appearances during his first season at the club. Matias subsequently failed to make a single goal contribution in the following two Championship campaigns, meaning that he made a total of just three Championship goal contributions in his first three seasons as a Wednesday player, as per Transfermarkt.

While his fourth and final Championship season as a Wednesday player was somewhat more promising, these stats may help us to understand why these Owls fans don’t appear to hold particularly positive memories of the player’s time at Hillsborough.
