George Caulkin has taken to Twitter to provide an update on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United after he was asked a question by a fan.
The fan asked the Athletic reporter if the would-be buyers of the Toon had at any point thought they were about to be given approval from the Premier League, and if that has now changed to a case of the takeover being done when it is done.
Caulkin responded and confirmed that the consortium had thought the deal was about to be accepted at previous points.
However, he would not answer the second bit, as he does not want to inflate expectations. He did say that ‘we’ll hear soon enough’, and he is sure ‘it’ll be the green light’.
Here’s what he said in full:
They have, yes (in answer to your first point). The second bit just runs the risk of inflating expectations & I don’t want to keep doing that, so I’ll pass on if you don’t mind. We’ll hear soon enough. And I’m sure it’ll be the green light

Does this reassure you?
Yes
No
What do we think?
Caulkin has remained positive on this takeover throughout, and a quick look through his tweets and replies section on his Twitter page, will show that he is confident that Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium will get approval from the Premier League.
The deal has been with the Premier League for a while now after a deposit was paid and contracts were exchanged.
However, since then, challenges have emerged from the likes of BeIN Sports and Amnesty International.
These have all caused a delay to the Premier League’s decision, which was expected last week.
However, journalist Paul Smith claimed last week that the league were now ‘very close’ to granting their approval of the deal, and it seems that Caulkin remains positive, despite refusing to provide a timescale.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few days.
