Some Sunderland fans have been full of praise for ex-Black Cats striker Kevin Phillips lately in response to @WilliamHill’s recent tweet reminiscing over his impressive Premier League campaign in 1999/00.

As this tweet states, Phillips managed to score 30 goals in 36 Premier League appearances in the 1999/00 season. Phillips’ tally of 30 goals allowed him to claim the Golden Boot award for the 1999/00 season, scoring seven more goals than the league’s second-highest goalscorer that term, Alan Shearer.

In addition to that, Phillips’ goalscoring tally from the that season was good enough to see him become “the first Englishman to win Europe’s prestigious Golden Shoe award”, as reported by the BBC. The former Sunderland goalscorer remains the only English player to ever claim this award.

In response to the tweet, some Black Cats fans have been sharing praise for Phillips, with one Sunderland supporter referring to Phillips as a “goal machine” in response to this tweet.

What do we think?

Phillips’ impressive goalscoring contributions helped Sunderland to finish in seventh place in the Premier League table in the 1999/00 season. The Black Cats have failed to finish in a higher position than that in any of their subsequent Premier League campaigns.

It might be understandable why some Sunderland supporters may hold some positive memories of Phillips’ time at the club, as a result of his and Sunderland’s performances during the 1999/00 season.
