Some Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to social media to react to a post from Championship-focused Twitter account @TheSecondTier which recently shared some footage of Royston Drenthe scoring a goal during his time at Hillsborough.

@TheSecondTier’s recent post shares footage of the only goal that Drenthe managed to score during his stint as a Sheffield Wednesday player. The 33-year-old joined the Owls on loan from Reading in September 2014. He made a total of 15 Championship appearances for the club before his loan deal ultimately came to an end in January 2015. His only Wednesday goal, which @TheSecondTier recently described as a “wonder-goal” came in a 1-1 Championship draw with Charlton Athletic

Some Owls supporters have been reacting negatively to this footage of Drenthe from his time at Hillsborough. Read the negative reactions of some Wednesday fans to this footage of Drenthe from his time at the club in the tweets below.

What do we think?

Drenthe managed to win the ‘Golden Player’ award at the 2007 European Under-21 Championships. His performances in that tournament caught the attention of Real Madrid, who spent a transfer fee of £12.6m to bring the player to the Santiago Bernabéu, as per Transfermarkt.co.uk.

As we saw in the tweets above, one Wednesday fan referred to Drenthe as a “huge waste of natural talent” in response to @TheSecondTier’s recent tweet sharing footage of his only Wednesday goal.

Considering how highly-rated Drenthe was in the early stages of his professional career, it may be understandable why some Wednesday fans may feel that the 33-year-old, who has been playing in the third tier of Dutch football this season with Kozakken Boys, failed to live up to his potential. Despite achieving the ‘Golden Player’ award at the 2007 European Under-21 Championships, Drenthe went on to make just one appearance for the Dutch national team in his career.
