Sky Sports has recently reported that the EFL has “launched an investigation into potential misconduct with regards to the takeover of Charlton Athletic by East Street Investments”. Charlton Athletic-focused reporter Louis Mendez posted a tweet sharing this news, which has caught the attention of some Addicks supporters.

As reported by BBC Sport back in January, East Street Investments completed a takeover of the London-based club, thus “ending Roland Duchatelet’s spell as owner”. As per Sky Sports, Duchatelet claimed that “it was vital for the long-term health of Charlton Athletic that this deal was completed at the very start of the January transfer window.”

In their recent report, Sky Sports explained that East Street Investments paid an initial £1 to complete this takeover in January, “with an agreement to pay a further £50m this summer to purchase remaining assets”. However, the club’s new majority shareholder, Tahnoon Nimer, has still failed to “satisfy EFL requests for proof and source of funding”, leading to this investigation.

Many of the Addicks supporters who have been responding to Mendez’s post sharing this news appear to have been quite worried by this report, with one Charlton fan declaring that they are “doomed”. Read the reactions of some Addicks supporters to this news in the tweets below.

What do we think?

If Charlton Athletic are punished due to this takeover breaching EFL regulations, it may be fair to say that it would be harsh on fans of the club who ultimately don’t have control over the owners and their actions.
