Fans of Celtic have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which recounts the club’s Cup Winners’ Cup tie against Rapid Vienna back in 1984.
The match in question was the controversial replayed second leg of the tie, as after a 3-1 victory for the Austrian side in Vienna and a 3-0 victory for Celtic in Glasgow, UEFA ordered that the second leg must be replayed between the two sides because of Rapid goalkeeper Herbert Feurer’s claim that he had been struck by a projectile from the Celtic crowd. Rapid Vienna went on to win the replayed match 1-0, knocking Celtic out of the competition.
In reaction to the post, which commented that Celtic were cheated out of progression to a possible final, fans of the club have flocked to share their opinions on the matter, with many agreeing with the statement that Celtic should have progressed, while others have simply shared their memories of the fixture.
Celtic fans massed at Warwick Road end of Old Trafford before game against Rapid Vienna in 1984. I was in lower level terrace think it was seats above us. Can almost see myself in there. One of the biggest disappointments ever, we were done out of a European final against Everton pic.twitter.com/hjIoqmHtg7

Our board has a history of letting us down, by not standing their ground and this was one monumental example!

Spot on, definitely one of our biggest disappointments, we were good enough to go all the way.

I was there, in the standing enclosure at the front of the main stand. Got day off of school. Great trip down, and then total deflation.

What do we think?
While many Celtic fans appear to still hold ill memories of their match against Vienna in 1984, it is not difficult to see why.
After their side successfully turned around a 3-1 away defeat in the first leg, by winning 3-0 at Parkhead, they assumed that their progression to the next round was all but secure.
However, after UEFA ordered that the match be replayed at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, Celtic went on to lose the tie 4-1 on aggregate, wiping out their fine victory at Parkhead and thus their chances of European glory.
