Some Newcastle United fans have recently taken to Twitter to share their view that Kevin Keegan should return to St. James’ Park in an ambassadorial role.
It may be fair to say that Keegan is a popular figure among Newcastle United supporters. The Daily Mail recently explained that the 69-year-old “is adored” by the club’s supporters, after making “78 appearances for the club” as a player, as well as having enjoyed two separate spells as manager of the club, nearly guiding the Magpies “to Premier League gold in the 1995/96 campaign”.
As per The Guardian, Keegan fell out with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley “who he felt had made him persona non grata”.
However, amid reports that the Magpies are currently subject to a Saudi-backed takeover, The Daily Mirror has recently claimed that Keegan “is being lined up for a sensational return to Newcastle” in an ambassadorial role by the club’s new prospective owners.
Some Newcastle fans have been reacting to these reports positively on social media, with many Magpies supporters sharing that they would like to see Keegan return to St. James’ Park in this capacity. Read the reactions of some Newcastle fans to these reports in the tweets below.

Seen him in a talk in last year and had the crowd in the palm of his hand. You could see why players loved him, the room hung on every word he spoke. Nobody can sell the club like him, it’s in his heart

As a manager in recent times he’s a mile ahead, he’s always got Newcastle from his playing days, it would be fate if he as was back in some capacity(Global ambassador) when he met a player they didn’t turn him down

It’s possible, and it’s also possible he might not want to be part of a board given his history as a football manager. But he might view it as a chance to be part of something special at Newcastle United, like he has done previously.

The epitome of everything we fans want at #NUFC. Unfortunately, I don’t think he’d be interested in a return. I’m afraid the best we can hope for is a statue.

What do we think?
Considering that Keegan is said to be revered by Newcastle fans, while Ashley has been an unpopular figure throughout his tenure at St. James’ Park, it may not be too surprising that some Newcastle fans have shown some excitement over the possibility of Keegan returning to the club once Ashley leaves, should this takeover be completed.
