This comes after Villa fan Twitter account @VillaTil1Die shared a post on their page asking their followers what they believed O’Neill’s biggest mistake at Villa was.
This post then gathered a lot of replies from Villa fans who were eager to share their thoughts on the matter.
Here’s a sample of Villa fans responding to the post:

Where to start. Had pretty much an open chequebook for 3 years and bought reo-Coker, Davies, Shorey, knight, routledge, salifou, Warnock, Heskey, harewood, sidwell, Collins, beye…..some of which were ok, none were CL quality.

Not using the young players at the time to supplement the squad, Cahill, Clark, Delph, Bannan and Albrighton would have stopped us buying older equivalents and would have ensured we didn’t tire in March.

Walking out it showed cowardice and he behaved like a spoilt child! It hurt his career more but it was also the start of our own problems within the club. Randy should of sold the club back then as he didn’t like or understand the costs of wanting UCL football

Was Martin O'Neill a success as Villa manager?
Yes
No
The 68-year-old first took the job at Villa Park in 2006 where he spent four years as Villa manager before leaving in 2010 (per Transfermarkt). O’Neill took charge of 190 matches at Villa, the most of any club he has managed in his career. Now that the question has been put to these Villa fans on what they thought was O’Neill’s biggest mistake during his tenure at the club, this gave lots of Villa fans the opportunity to have their say.
Wasting money – Buying poor reserve players and putting them on ridiculous contracts – then throwing the Europa lg by playing the poor reserves to try to get Lerner to give him more to spend on players

Moscow – disgraceful. Rumour is he was on a CL bonus & was desperate for 4th, & this was the expense. A realistic trophy squandered for an unrealistic dream & personal gain #avfc

Having a gargantuan ego and being a very average manager who wasted millions on poor players with no re-sale value.

What do we think?
It appears that these Villa fans don’t look back on O’Neill’s time at the club with much positivity, which is a shame considering how long he was at Villa Park for.
