Some West Brom fans have been discussing the club’s ‘worst panic-buy’ ever on social media, with many Baggies supporters pointing to Victor Anichebe as the club’s most regrettable deadline day purchase.
Anichebe joined West Brom on the second of September 2013, with The Baggies parting with £5.31 million in order to bring the centre forward to The Hawthorns from Everton. The Nigerian striker scored a total of nine goals in 63 appearances for West Brom in all competitions over his three seasons at the club, failing to score more than three Premier League goals in any of his three seasons as a West Brom player.
Anichebe left West Brom in 2016 when his contract expired, ultimately failing to recoup any of the £5.31 million they paid to bring the former Nigerian international to the club in 2013.
Anichebe’s unimpressive goal return, in addition to leaving on a free transfer three years after originally joining the club, hasn’t left some Baggies supporters with many positive memories of the attacker. Some West Brom fans have been sharing their negative opinion of the club’s decision to sign Anichebe on social media. Read the negative posts from some West Brom fans regarding their former striker in the tweets below.
Is Anichebe West Brom's worst ever panic buy?YES, ANICHEBE IS THE BAGGIES' WORST PANIC BUY EVERNO, WEST BROM HAVE MADE WORSE PANIC BUYS THAN ANICHEBE |
Re: #panicbuying, what's been the worst panic buy your club has made (must be someone on the final day of the window)???
I'll start with Anichebe, £5m for #wba (2013). A player so overpriced that another club had successful loan bid accepted for him 2 days earlier

Ending up with Anichebe over Lukaku coming back still is painful

Anichebe had decent games for us and got a few important goals but £5m was ridiculous.
Looking back the signings of Montero, Murphy and Johansen last year were truly terrible. Johansen was okay but talk about signings bodies rather than any bit of quality.

If you mention anichebe,Some fans still bring up ‘that 60 minutes against newcastle,he was unplayable’
Like it was all worth it because of that one game…….? (he limped off injured in the same game) ?????— Stephen D (@dobo86) March 8, 2020
Nothing worse than Anichebe Chris absolutely nothing worse. End of thread Sir ?? #panicbuyers

Anichebe probably the worst, given the price, good call Chris. But Albion have had some other stinkers over the years on deadline day. Nyom was £4m wasn’t he? He’s got to be in with a shout.

Yup, Anichebe for us, but that pales into insignificance compared to Liverpool paying £35m for Andy Carroll.

What do we think?
Less than four years after leaving West Brom on a free transfer in 2016, the former Nigeria international, now 31-years-old, is currently without a club, having last played for Beijing BSU. Anichebe left the Chinese club in January 2018, having scored just two goals in 10 appearances.
It may be fair to say that Anichebe’s career hasn’t hit the heights that he or West Brom’s supporters would have hoped it would following his transfer to The Hawthorns in 2013. It may be understandable why some Baggies fans look back on this transfer negatively.
