Yesterday, Rangers fans were reminded of a brilliant solo goal scored by Steven Whittaker against Sporting Lisbon back in 2008.
The goal was scored in the 90th minute of the second leg of Rangers’ UEFA Cup quarter-final clash against the Lisbon side, securing the Gers’ spot against Fiorentina in the semi-finals.
But many fans admitted that during the build-up to the goal they were screaming at Whittaker to pass the ball. They are glad he held onto it now, though. They claim that Whittaker, who was brought to Ibrox by Walter Smith, was a brilliant player for the side and that this was one of his best moments in a Gers shirt.

Was lucky enough to be behind the goals screaming “pass it” for the duration of his run. My favourite Rangers goal.

One of the best if not the best away goal scored by anyone in a Rangers jersey. My favourite ever!

Which solo goal was better?
Whittaker vs Lisbon
Aribo vs Braga
What do we think?
Rangers ended up progressing past Fiorentina and into the final, where they lost to Zenit St. Petersburg 2-0.
However, despite the heartbreaking loss in the final, many Gers fans will remember Whittaker’s brilliant goal with fond memories.
Because, for many football fans, a final is sometimes only a small part of a much bigger picture. Instead, the moments witnessed in the journey to a final itself can sometimes hold the dearest of memories.
