Many Rangers fans have been reacting with frustration on social media to some comments that were made by club captain James Tavernier in his recent programme notes.

Images of Tavernier’s comments, which have allegedly been taken from the club captain’s programme notes from Rangers’ SPL loss to Hamilton Academical this past Wednesday, have been circulating around social media in the wake of second-placed Rangers’ 1-0 loss to Hamilton this week.

The alleged images of the 28-year-old right-back’s recent programme notes have riled up some Rangers supporters on social media. Some fans of the club have particularly taken issue with Tavernier’s statement that “whenever anybody puts a bit of pressure on us in Scotland or gets in our face, it seems to affect us too much”, which is included in the images being criticised by some Rangers fans on social media.

The 28-year-old right-back was appointed Rangers captain by club manager Steven Gerrard in July 2018. The Rangers manager, who captained both Liverpool and England in his playing career, identified Tavernier as a “leader”, upon naming him Rangers captain prior to the 2018/19 campaign.

However, the right-back’s recent comments have led to some Rangers supporters questioning Tavernier’s suitability as captain on social media. What do we think?

While it may be a good sign that the club captain’s comments show that he may have recognised an issue within the squad, with regard to their ability to handle “pressure”, it may have been a poor choice for the 28-year-old to include comments criticising his team’s ability to handle pressure in his programme notes.

It may have been a better idea for the Rangers right-back to criticise the team in private, without sharing the criticism in the public domain by including them in his programme notes. While it may be important for the team to be aware of issues that could be holding them back, it may also be understandable why some Rangers fans have questioned the club captain’s decision to share that criticism in his programme notes.
