Spurs fans have been discussing a post from Alasdair Gold, in which he shares an article from his Football.London colleague Joe Doyle, which discusses the possibility of the Premier League resuming in July.
The article suggests that: “The FA, Premier League and English Football League are currently planning to finish the 2019/20 season behind closed doors over a period of four to six weeks starting in July,” per Football.London.
Doyle also writes that: “all emphasis currently is on finishing the season and therefore avoiding the potential ramifications of an unfinished competition, including hundreds of millions of pounds in lost revenue for clubs.
With the current lockdown period set to end on April 13, clubs will be hoping that the conditions can be relaxed with players able to return to training.
Fixtures are postponed until at least April 30 at the moment, but the expectation is that there will be further postponements, with issues over insurance and player safety likely to stop any matches taking place until the crisis is over.” per Football.London.
As Doyle suggests, April 30 is the current date which Premier League football is set to resume, but recent reports have suggested that that will be extended further, as the UK continues to deal with the current viral outbreak. Earlier this month, some non-league competitions were declared null and void by the FA, but they, of course, have slightly less financial implications than the likes of the Premier Leauge.
From a football perspective, resuming the season in July could be great news for Jose Mourinho’s squad, as by then he would presumably have the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn back fit, so perhaps they could mount a late challenge for the top-four spots.
Do you think the season will finish?
Yes
No, it will be voided
Reaction from Spurs fans to Gold’s post sharing the article from Doyle can be seen in the tweets below.
Absolute nonsense… no way players will be training again at end of April,
And playing behind closed doors becasue clubs are worried about lack of revenue?? You don’t get any revenue if the stadium is closed to the public— Luke Neville (@lukenev13) March 28, 2020
I don’t believe this will happen. Can’t see the season being completed now. I think it’ll be voided, unfortunately, despite costs, I think the costs of putting players at risk is higher

They’re a disgrace. Will never happen. Players, agents & families should go on strike if so. Puts players families in danger

Seems an awful decision for all supporters

These Spurs fans don’t seem convinced that the season will resume in July, with many speculating that it won’t finish at all.
What do we think?
It is impossible to predict when things will return to normal but football returning too early could well put players and their families at risk, so it seems pointless to try and predict an official return date at this point.
