Spurs fans have been discussing whether a fit Mousa Dembele would have made in last year’s Champions League final against Liverpool.
Spurs fan LJohnson quoted Alasdair Gold’s tweet about decisions which they would change from the past year, suggesting that the club should not have sold the Belgian midfielder and that he could have made the difference in the final in Madrid. The former Fulham man joined up with Chinese side Guangzhou R & F in January of last year, having made 249 appearances for the North London club after joining in 2012.
Spurs, of course, lost the final 2-0 against Liverpool thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi, although this fan seems to think that the result could have gone another way had the club retained the services of the skillful midfielder.
Would Dembele have made a difference in the final?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to the discussion on Dembele can be seen in the tweets below.
Prime Dembele was a monster – the Dembele that was dubiously healthy enough to get through a game would have been a liability that match. Tbh the difference was a fluke handball

Peak Dembele was long gone by the UCL Final. Not backing Poch and buying/selling absolutely no one for 18 months is what’s led us to where we are today.

This isn’t true mate. Dembele was done. He was a hindrance when he played during those last 6 months. Winks was outperforming him by a country mile from Nov onwards.
When Mous got injured in early December, we didn’t miss him at all. Doubt he would’ve changed the final outcome

He wasn’t himself anymore – his dribbles, tackles, etc. per game were way down.

Why? He’d have been injured. Loved him but was a liability.

Nah. He was broken.

Noooo. We had all the possession but couldn’t penetrate, Dembele was never the one to make the difference when we’re trying to break a team down. Plus his knees were gone he was the same in his last season.

These Spurs fans don’t seem to agree that Dembele would have made a difference in the final, suggesting that he was way past his best by that point.
What do we think?
Dembele struggled with injuries in the latter part of his time at Spurs, which was no doubt a significant factor in him moving away and it seems as if these fans seem to think that by that point he was no longer the player he once was, and therefore wouldn’t have made much difference.
