A group of Newcastle United supporters have been discussing how much a prime Alan Shearer would be worth in today’s market. The question was posed by @toonarmy_com on Twitter and here is how some of the fans have been responding.

£150million easily. Would guarantee goals at any team in the world & with the 1 central striker system most teams play these days I think he’d score even more than he did back then ??

What do we think?
Shearer joined the Toon Army from Blackburn Rovers in July 1996 and went on to become a Newcastle United legend. With 206 goals for the Magpies, you can understand why these fans rate their former striker so highly.
Would Alan Shearer be worth in excess of £150m nowadays?
Yes
No
He went on to play for England on 63 occasions, scoring 30 goals and eventually retired with the Magpies in 2006. The club’s current centre-forward Joelinton, who cost £39.6m from Hoffenheim in the summer, has scored just a solitary Premier League goal and has an average performance rating of 6.73/10 according to WhoScored.com.
Taking all of that into consideration, a valuation of between £150m and £200m, as quoted by some of the fans, you could argue, seems fair. However, in the eyes of many of the St. James’ Park faithful, Shearer was priceless.
