Liverpool were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night courtesy of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The Reds looked as though they were on their way through to the quarter-finals when Roberto Firmino scored in extra-time to send Anfield into wild celebrations.
However, they were pegged back by the visitors when Adrian’s error led to Marcos Llorente’s goal and the 25-year-old added another just nine minutes later putting the hosts in a position where they needed to score twice in the second half of extra-time. Alvaro Morata added a third for Atletico Madrid and ended all hope of the Reds retaining their European crown.
