Spurs fans have been reacting to the news that unless Eric Dier commits to the club by signing a new contract, he will be sold this summer – as reported by Daily Mail, and then relayed by Hotspur Related on Twitter, as well as a few other fan accounts.

Having only featured 11 times for Spurs this season, the 26-year-old fears that his lack of playing time may result in his omission from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

Unless Tottenham can convince the defensive midfielder that he will become more involved in first-team football, Dier will reportedly not sign a contract extension with the North London club.

With Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wanting to avoid yet another player entering the final year of their contract, as has been the case with Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, it is reported that should Dier refuse to sign a new contract before the end of the season, Tottenham will look to move the £27million-rated player on during the summer transfer window.

The news has been welcomed by many Spurs fans, with some stating that their beliefs that Dier is no longer up to the standards required to start for their club.

What do we think?

With Tanguy Ndombélé, Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, Gedson Fernandes, Moussa Sissoko and even Victor Wanyama all capable of playing as the two central midfielders in Mourhino’s double-pivot; Eric Dier provides squad depth, at best.

Although Tottenham are a little short in central defence, which Dier is adept at playing, if the club receive an offer anywhere near his £27million valuation, they should not think twice about selling the former Sporting Lisbon player.
