Last night, Alasdair Gold completed a Q&A with Spurs fans. One of the topics he discussed was striker Kion Etete.

In the post, Gold indicates that while he doesn’t believe the striker is ready for first-team football, he is the kind of striker that Jose Mourinho would love to work with.

Here’s exactly what he had to say:

“He’s not ready yet but in essence he’s the type of striker who Jose Mourinho would love.”

The 18-year-old joined Spurs from Notts County last summer for an undisclosed fee. But why doesn’t Gold think Etete is ready to make the jump to Tottenham’s first team?

At the end of the day, it comes down to experience. The striker is yet to make his first-team debut for the club. Despite this, he has made 12 appearances for Tottenham in the U18 Premier League, captaining the youth team against Arsenal. He has scored six goals in these 12 matches.

But, while he has done reasonably well at the youth level, he hasn’t done enough to be handed regular Premier League minutes. If we compare him to an emerging Harry Kane, there is a stark difference.

Kane made many appearances out on loan with Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester before becoming a regular for Tottenham Hotspur. These appearances at a first-team level surely helped prepare him for England’s top flight.

Of course, not every player will have the same career path and not every player will go on to have the success that Kane has found. Kane has scored 136 goals in 201 Premier League appearances. But throwing a player into England’s top flight with such limited experience seems like a bad call.

However, with Kane out injured and Heung-min Son expected to be out for the rest of the season with a fractured arm, Mourinho may have little choice but to hand Etete a few starts.

Who knows – perhaps the Englishman will seize the opportunity and cement himself as a regular first-teamer for the remainder of his Tottenham career?
