Some Liverpool fans have shared their frustration on social media following recent comments from Carlton Cole on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate’, claiming that luck and other teams not performing “to their peak” have played a significant role in Liverpool’s success this season.
Despite winning 26 of their 27 Premier League games so far this season, earning a total of 79 points from a possible 81 in the process, Cole claimed that Liverpool have enjoyed their fair share of luck during their impressive campaign, going on to claim that his former club West Ham “should have won” their recent meeting with the league leaders.
Liverpool-focused Twitter account @empireofthekop brought Cole’s comments to the attention of their followers as they made a post attempting to refute the former Premier League forward’s claims, stating that the Reds’ success this season is simply down to the team being “about as good as anything English football has ever seen”.
Many Liverpool fans appeared to share a similar sentiment to @empireofthekop with regard to Cole’s comments, as they were quick to respond to their tweet in a similar fashion attempting to refute Cole’s claims. Depressing that an ex pro has that view. Whether the other have dropped off is not our problem.

Carlton Cole a failed footballer, I wouldn’t take his opinion on anything tbh
Talks drivel, but he’s entitled to it even if it’s bonkers.— R1ch (@noneshall_pass) February 26, 2020
Fluke is having you as a pundit.

Carlton Cole – a man who won’t let a fact stand in the way of an ill-informed opinion.

I’ll defer to his knowledge on luck, seeing as he somehow was employed as a professional footballer, but I wouldn’t let him clean my windows, let alone lecture about football. Bluffer.

I don’t care what anyone chooses to say about us if/when we win the league that’ll be all that matters. Not bothered by anyone else’s opinion tbh

Who cares what he thinks

What do we think?
It may be wrong to claim that Liverpool have enjoyed no luck this season. Had West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski not made an error that resulted in a Liverpool goal in the Hammers’ recent meeting with Liverpool, the league leaders may have gone on to drop points against David Moyes’ men.
Furthermore, according to understat.com, the Reds’ ‘expected points’ total for the 2019/20 season is 21.2 points lower than their actual points total, at present. However, it may be unfair to disregard any of the Reds’ impressive accomplishments this season simply because elements of luck have gone their way at times.
Regardless of luck, it may be fair to say that trophies speak for themselves, and the current Champions League and Club World Cup holders have been proving themselves at the highest levels consistently in that regard of late.
