In an article for Football.london in which Alasdair Gold answered questions from fans, the journalist has discussed the news of a potential takeover at the North London club.

The journalist was asked on Twitter about whether there was any substance to the rumour that Alphabet, the parent company of Google, were planning a takeover bid at Spurs. Gold diminished the rumour in his article, however, suggesting that there is always likely to be takeover rumours at a club like Spurs, especially considering the recent appointment of Jose Mourinho, as well as the move to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season.

Here was Gold’s response to the Spurs fan (via Football.London):

“I haven’t heard anything about such a move and I don’t believe Alphabet even invest in sport.

“It feels like one of those whispers that is either people getting confused amid the new stories about Alphabet or even someone just starting a prank rumour, like the Kraft family one, and it’s snowballing from there.

“There will always be NFL owner buyout rumours due to Daniel Levy’s close ties to the sport and the amount of research and dialogue he has had with various high profiles American sports owners and franchises while building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Ultimately Levy and Joe Lewis are businessmen and if they get an offer that makes sense they could well take it, but it doesn’t feel like that moment has arrived just yet.”

What do we think?

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has often been criticised by Lilywhites fans for his frugality over the years, however, in this season alone, he broke the club-record fee to bring Tanguy Ndombele to the club, as well as spending big on Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn during the January transfer window.

Gold has seemingly dismissed the rumours of Alphabet wanting to take over at the North London club, although Spurs are widely considered to now have one of the best stadiums and some of the best training facilities in world football, so perhaps it won’t be too long until there is some genuine interest in the club.
