Tottenham Hotspur defeated relegation-threatened Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon having come from behind. Toby Alderweireld had a mixed afternoon in the Midlands – by scoring an own-goal to hand the home side the lead inside 10 minutes and then he equalised with a striker’s finish in front of the Holte End to level things.

The Belgian, recently signed a contract extension back in December, shortly after Jose Mourinho’s arrival. The deal will see the 30-year-old remain with the club until 2023.

The former Atletico Madrid defender was the first to be critical of his own display via social media and here is how some of the supporters have responded.

What do we think?

Alderweireld, currently valued at £31.5m (via Transfermarkt.co.uk) has played 191 times for the North London club and was a crucial part of the team that suffered a heartbreaking defeat in last season’s Champions League final. We believe the arrival of Jose Mourinho is what persuaded him to sign on the dotted line and so fans may well have reason to think he will continue to play a key role moving forward.
